Areas of interest: check Dementia and Communities
Sue set up Dementia Friendly in East Lothian (DFEL) so people with dementia, their families and friends would feel supported and valued members of their community. It was based on her experience caring for parents with dementia when a smile, kindness and a bit of extra time and understanding made all the difference to the quality of their lives. DFEL is a community led initiative based on community psychology and assets based community development. There are now 8 communities actively engaged in becoming dementia friendly and DFEL is a CIC. Increasingly DFEL works with service providers to develop innovative ways to strengthen community connections for people with dementia, including work with the Memory Skills Team and Dementia Friendly Yoga in local care homes. DFEL is also developing facilitated friendship groups for people with Dementia (with DEEP) and supporting the development of East Lothian's first Dementia Strategy. Sue is a Chartered Psychologist and Scottish member of the Society's Faculty for the Psychology of Older People. She is Chair of the Carers Scotland Committee and a Trustee of Carers UK. Sue is also co-Chair of her local Area Partnership and a Community Councillor.
