Dr Lynne Mitchell is Co-founder, with Professor Elizabeth (Libby) Burton, of the WISE (Wellbeing in Sustainable Environments) research group, formerly at Oxford Brookes University, now at the University of Warwick. Lynne developed her interest in older people, social sustainability and the built environment while working as a care home assistant, and then as a chartered town planner. Her PhD at Oxford Brookes University was in dementia-friendly design and she co-authored Inclusive Urban Design: Streets for Life (Routledge, 2006), widely regarded as the first book to address the design needs of older people in the outdoor environment. Lynne has worked on three major EPSRC-funded projects, including both phases of Inclusive Design for Getting Outdoors (I'DGO) and Designing the Physical External Environment to Improve the Quality of Life of Older People with Dementia, which resulted in the Neighbourhoods for Life checklist.
