Julie Christie is the Partnership Lead for Dementia in East Dunbartonshire, one of Scotland’s most rapidly ‘ageing’ places. She is particularly interested in co-production, adult protection, rights and risks. Having previously worked as both a psychiatric nurse and social worker, Julie obtained an MSc in Dementia Studies in 2002. She has been employed as a consultant for the Dementia Services Development Centre, and Lecturer, at the University of Stirling, and in senior and managerial roles within social work, older people and hospital services. She is currently undertaking a PhD on resilience, dementia and social work practice. Julie is an International Dementia Consultant at Hammond Care, Australia, a member of the Scottish Dementia Research Consortium (SDRC) and a founder member of the dementia PhD forum on twitter #demphd

Co-production with People Affected by Dementia

The idea is simple—giving people living with dementia a stronger PRESENCE in local communities and public services and enabling them to make a contribution to other people’s lives. It therefore means moving from needs assessments to capability assessments. This implies a new type of collaboration between people living with dementia and public services, based on co-production approaches and values. East Dunbartonshire Council, the Joint Improvement Team and Governance International have embarked on PRESENT, which looks to transform public services and local communities through co-production when working with people affected by dementia. Better outcomes for people affected by dementia

East Dunbartonshire is an area in Scotland where citizens generally enjoy a very good quality of life, with relatively low levels of unemployment and material deprivation. One of the most significant social challenges facing East Dunbartonshire, however, is its ageing population.
