Christopher Phillipson is Professor of Sociology & Social Gerontology at the University of Manchester. He is Co-Director of the University’s hub for ageing research, MICRA (Manchester Institute for Collaborative Research on Ageing).
Before moving to Manchester in 2012, Christopher was Professor of Applied Social Studies and Social Gerontology at Keele University, where he held a number of senior posts and founded the Centre for Social Gerontology. He was elected a Fellow of the British Gerontological Society in 2008 and received its Outstanding Achievement Award in 2011.
Christopher’s research, funded by a number of ESRC and cross-research council programmes, focuses on social, political and economic issues associated with ageing populations. His work on the relationship between population ageing and urbanisation is supported by Manchester City Council and a Marie Curie Fellowship from the EU.
